Introduction to Caribbean Drumming: Bomba

This class is intended for adults who are interested in the study of Afro-Puertorican Bomba and Afro-Cuban 6/8 Güiro, and hold 5-8 students per session. The spring cycle will focus on Bomba. Registration is required and limited to the first 8 participants for each class, please sign up early!

During this series you will:

– Explore the history and cultural significance of four strains of the Puertorican Bomba – Sicá, Yubá, Güembé & Holandés. Also, the Afro-Cuban 6/8 genre of Güiro.

– Learn how the clave relates to both of these musical art forms.

– Learn how to execute the basic sounds and dynamics on the Puertorican barril and the Cuban tumbadora.

– Study peripheral percussion instruments including shekere, campana, güiro, maraca and cuá.

– Learn the use of Call and Response (Antiphony) in song to complement the rhythms.
