Daniel S. Schanck Observatory, a former astronomical observatory that was part of the old Rutgers College. Built in 1865, the small, two story building was built to resemble the Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece. The observatory was named after Daniel Schanck, who provided a respectable amount of funding toward the facility. The Daniel S. Schanck Observatory was Rutgers’ first astronomical observatory and was used until the 1960s. In 2012, Rutgers University had the exterior of the building restored. Photographs of the interior taken during a Historic American Building Survey show the interior and its unique features.
